The Prime Minister's Address to the Nation
"And now, we will be airing the Prime Minister's address to the nation live
from his office in Ottawa." announced the News Anchor Peter Mansbridge.
McColl's face and shoulders appeared on TV's across the country, his face
solemn, sitting behind his desk in the PMO.
"My fellow citizens of Canada.
Today is our nation's 148th birthday, a day to celebrate, but also to
remember, the people and deeds of our country. Let us first remember our
great figures: Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir Wilfred Laurier, Alexander Graham
Bell, Frederick Banting, Mackenzie King, Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau.
There are so many, and these are just a few names that echo through the
ages.
Now let us remember those who have served and possibly died in the service
of our nation, from WWI, WWII, Korea, Yugoslavia, Somalia, Rwanda,
Afghanistan and many other UN missions around the world. Those hundreds of
thousands of men and women sacrificed much, and in some cases all, for the
betterment of our world and the protection of our way of life.
Now today, we are faced with new threats. We live in the age of terrorism.
Many of these terrorists are willing to sacrifice their lives. They are
willing to kill innocent and peaceful civilians in order to meet their goals
of destruction and carnage. I salute the RCMP and CSIS for their efforts in
this regard. Just a few days ago, members of the Toronto RCMP Special
Circumstances Unit, paired with the Ontario Provincial Police, successfully
raided and captured several members of a fundamentalist Islamic terror
cell. These men were supplied and financed by Iran.
My sympathies go out to all who lost loved ones in the Montreal terror
attack. They will be avenged.
Iran's actions at this juncture seem almost suicidal. They are hemmed in on
all sides by unfriendly countries and military forces. To attack a
defenceless and peaceful country such as Azerbaijan is a most despicable and
cowardly act. The Iranians cannot be allowed to get away scot free in this
regard. To that end, I have authorized a deployment to Georgia consisting
of elements of the Lord Strathcona's Horse Regiment, the Royal Canadian
Regiment, the 12e Regiment Blinde du Canada, Princess Patricia's Canadian
Light Infantry, and the Royal 22e Regiment. Special Forces in the form of
JTF2 and support forces such as combat engineers and artillery are also
being sent to the effort. Our earlier contribution of jet aircraft and
ships will remain the same.
This government has cooperated with the US government to produce an
ultimatum to Iran. They have until July.7th to comply or a state of war
will exist between us. We feel that all other peaceful means ranging from
negotiations to sanctions to the United Nations have all been most
unfortunately exhausted. Canada will be working closely with our allies
over the coming months.
This coming year your government will work towards improving our national
health care, decreasing university tuitions, the establishment of our new
national parks, and many other new projects. May it be a productive and
happy year. Now, let us all enjoy this day as a celebration of our national
ideals and culture. I wish you all a happy Canada Day. God bless."
