So Japan is back. PS Mike if this post is late for your report, np, just skip it and move on) ?Late to the Game? Prime Minister Shunichi Sato Japan May 6 2014 Sato was less than happy to have to have this meeting but the situation allowed for nothing else. He stood behind and waited for the Iranian Ambassador to be shown in. The doors opened and Jamshid Maleki entered, he was a short man with a kind face, and very well dressed. He walked in and took in the grave face of the Prime Minister. ?Jamshid,? Sato greeted with a short nod. ?I have some bad news.? The Iranian Ambassador nodded and remained standing. ?I think I know what you are talking about Shunich-san,? he said in perfect Japanese. Sato nodded. He handed him a letter, Japan?s official condemnation of the Iranian occupation and the announcement of Japan clearing out it?s embassy in Tehran and calling for all Japanese citizens to leave the country.. ?And we are going to be looking elsewhere for our oil.? ?Our occupation is no different from China?s? ?True,? Sato admitted. ?But you?re not China.? ?By which you mean a nuclear power,? Jamshid reasoned. ?Yes,? Sato said. ?How do you know we aren?t?? he asked. ?Our intelligence is pretty sure, plus your government would have made a point of testing one of their weapons by now, to prevent the storm they?ve called down on themselves.? Jamshid nodded. ?And where are you going to look for your oil?? asked the Iranian ambassador. ?We?re working on that part,? Sato said to avoid mentioning their specific plans. Jamshid nodded. ?Well then I won?t keep you Mr. Prime Minister, it?s been a pleasure.? Sato came around his desk and bowed to the Ambassador. ?Yes it has, good luck to you and your government, hopefully this can be resolved diplomatically.? The Iranian bowed back and nodded. ?I hope so,? he said. ?But if it can?t, what can I tell my government your position is?? ?Japan will be in full support of any effort to dislodge Iranian troops by force.? ?Including participation?? Sato nodded and Jamshid made a face. ?You?d go to war?? he asked. ?Our people were in Georgia too,? Sato replied. Only one of the Japanese peacekeepers had been wounded but that was just luck. Jamshid didn?t reply, he was not going to confirm or deny Iranian involvement in those attacks, Sato didn?t expect his government had told him, but by now most of the world could see them for what they were. ?Good luck to you then, Mr. Prime Minister.? ?And you Mr. Ambassador.? The two men shook hands and the Iranian left Sato?s office, as Sato sat down and read over the statement he would be offering to the press in a few minutes making public what he had just shared with the Ambassador. Actions: 1> Japan recalls its Ambassador from Iran and asks all Japanese currently in Iran to leave as soon as possible. 2> Japan boycotts oil from Iran and occupied Azerbijan. Looking to increase their purchases from Russia, Southeast Asia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States to cover the shortfall. 3> Inform the US and France that Japan is ready to participate in any international action with the approval of the plan by the Diet. Prime Minister Shunichi Sato Japan April 30 2014 It was all Sato could do not to fall asleep when he rode back from Sensoji Temple dressed in a traditional kimono, one he had worn too often since taking office. It was his funeral kimono. This time it was for the few victims of the latest Tokyo earthquake. He sloshed around the ice cubes in his scotch as he rode in silent contemplation. The tiredness had very little to do with the dead. It seemed to be his natural state these days, things were not going well for the Land of the Rising Sun. The earthquake was just the most recent disaster, the poor harvests worldwide were hitting the economy now, driving up food prices already high due to the fact it all had to be imported in the first place. Beyond that, there was the insanity in the Caucasus and Georgia, the safe little peacekeeping mission he had sent Japenese troops on was no longer safe and with the Chechen situation was not likely to remain little, the Russians would likely ask for higher participation and given the fact that Japan needed one solid ally in the region, he would agree. ?That will go down well with the Diet.? Akemi, Sato?s daughter and closest aide looked up from her little computer device. Or maybe it was a phone, he really didn?t know. ?What?s that?? she asked used to his sudden outbursts. ?Sending more troops to Georgia.? ?Why are we going to do that?? ?To make nice to the Russians, besides, we need some combat experience,? Sato reasoned. ?That will be little comfort to the widows,? she pointed out. Sato shrugged. ?I am too tired to be diplomatic about that, right now President Williams has had more combat experience than most of the Japanese Self Defense Force.? ?I always thought you were proud of that,? she observed putting down her little technological toy and looking over at him. ?That was before the world went crazy,? he said and then waving a hand indicating his kimono. ?Besides Japan doesn?t seem to be much safer right now.? ?Don?t tell me you?re starting to believe the old crazies that say you?re cursed by the Kami because of all the disasters.? Sato scoffed. ?No, of course not, I am just saying death is everywhere, these days,? he explained. ?Then why send our people to find it on the other side of the world, it doesn?t make sense to me.? ?Well it?s a good thing you?re not the Prime Minister,? Sato said and sipped his scotch ignoring his daughter?s hurt expression. It was silent in the car except for the thump-thump of it crossing a bridge. ?Are you alright?? Akemi asked after a moment. Sato looked up. ?I am tired Akemi.? ?Then take a vacation like President Williams,? she said without sympathy. ?We?re not America, all the seven to eleveners would vote me out of office,? he said speaking of the old school Japanese business men who left home at seven in the morning and came home at eleven at night. Sato had been one of them when he?d been the CEO of his family company. It was likely why of all his children Akemi was one of the few who still talked to him. Sato downed the rest of his scotch and then looked over at his daughter. ?I am sorry Akemi, I know you aspire to this office, you will be an excellent Prime Minister.? She nodded showing no sign if that had soothed her hurt any. Sato frowned, sometimes his daughter was impossible, but then she came by it honestly, he knew he was the same way. ?Anyhow, talk to Yurika, and cancel my morning appointments. I will take a half day, Not quite a trip to Hawaii, but it?s all I have time for.? Akemi nodded. ?Okay,? she said though Sato suspected she?d already done something similar. ?You could always take the weekend back home in Niko or in Kyoto.? Sato smiled. ?I?ll need to make up for my half-day, but see if we can get away for a trip home, I?d like to go to Toshogu, and seek the advice of Ieyasu.? Akemi smiled. ?I am afraid his advice is a bit more violent than what would be accepted by the Diet.? ?I suppose crushing my domestic opponents in combat and closing off the country would be a bit extreme,? he mused with a grin. She chuckled lightly. ?A little.? ?Too bad,? he said lightly. The car pulled up to the Kotei, the Prime Minister?s residence, recently declared safe after the post earthquake inspection. A few meters away, divided by a security fence and armed guards from the Prime Minister, a few junior civil servants still marched their picket lines, while their seniors were snug in bed. Oh yes, the ridiculous strike, he had forgotten that in his list of current woes and the tiredness increased. He shook his head and set down his cup on the limo?s bar. ?I am going to bed,? he announced to his daughter and leaned over and kissed her cheek. ?They?ll drive you home.? ?Alright,? Akemi said and then looked her father over critically. ?Are you sure you are okay?? she asked. He nodded. ?Tired, that?s all, I promise.? She did not look convinced but she nodded anyhow. ?Okay,? she yawned. ?Sleep well.? Sato opened the door and climbed out of the car a little unsteadily. ?Good night Akemi-chan.? She waved and one of the Kotei stewards closed the door as Yamagata the head of the Prime Minister?s security detail joined him. ?Are you alright sir?? he asked. Sato just about rolled his eyes, however his respect for his protector kept him from doing more than thinking about it. ?Yes,? he yawned. ?I just need to go to bed, oh and if your people could not wake me until 11, I apparently have a half day.? Yamagata nodded. ?Yes sir.? With that the Prime Minister walked inside his residence to get some sleep. Actions: 1> Establish some of what has been going on recently. 2> Advance personal plot for Sato, don?t worry John I am not stealing the tired out thing from you this is going somewhere else. 3> And finally, offer the Russians to increase the Japanese presence in Georgia to a maximum of 2000 troops. From michael.michaeldowney at gmail.com Mon Jun 2 13:56:32 2008 From: michael.michaeldowney at gmail.com (Michael Downey) Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 15:26:32 -0230 Subject: [War] Special Report: Lines in the Sand Message-ID: <6b6ab8a70806021056u674c7037rd9b46a1e57851fe@mail.gmail.com> (As of 28 May 2014) As both China and the largely American-led AZFOR coalition muster their forces Iran finds itself in a very precarious position. Many reformist officials in the civil government foresee a terrible defeat in Iran if both of the world's superpowers attack the Middle East country and have called for a negotiated peace and withdrawal of Iranian forces from Azerbaijan. Unfortunately for these voices of reason (and the world in general) the religious theocracy that hold the true reigns of power has shown little intent of pulling back. In an inflammatory speech made before large crowd in Tehran, the Ayatollah decreed that God favored Iran above all nations on Earth and that the 'divine will and fury of heaven' would ensure an absolute Iranian victory in the 'coming crusade against the two Great Satans,' no doubt China and the United States. To emphasize the point, Iranian units have begun to dig in and fortify their positions in Southern Azerbaijan while home guard units have begun massing near the Pakistani border. Behind closed doors the Iranians have responded somewhat to China's overtures and offers. Tehran's demands are that Azerbaijan make Iran the exclusive customer of the oil field and at a price per barrel far below the global average. Furthermore Iran wants, in addition to access to advanced defence systems offered by China, a sale contract for the J-10 'Chengdu' fighter aircraft made by the PLAAF. Pakistan has relented and agreed to allow the PLA to begin moving forces into the country and make use of Pakistani military bases in the event of war with Iran. While the White House has not yet had an opportunity to comment, the US Congress is furious at this 'betrayal' with more conservative Congressmen calling for Pakistan's Major Non-Nato Ally status to be revoked. The AZFOR coalition is shaping up effectively but slowly. Britain has offered to dispatch almost eight thousand troops with another five thousand offered from Spain, Italy and Poland and . The French parliament has conditionally approved the possibility of French forces being sent to fight with AZFOR as well, but the lack of promised French actions at the UN has caused upset grumbles from the US State Department. Meanwhile in Japan, the Diet is drawn over Sato's decision to send an additional two thousand troops to Georgia, ostensibly under the mandate of peacekeepers in the pre-existing operation. While not technically marked for combat with either AZFOR or the Russians, the Diet is concerned that Georgia will certainly act as the primary staging ground for an AZFOR invasion of Iran and JGSDF troops will be caught up in the fighting. For now the Diet has given a hesitant nod to the increased deployments. A short but bloody 'mop-up operation' conducted by the 106th Guard Division of the Russian VDV has quashed the rebel outbreak around Grozny, leaving Russia's flank functionally secure. The Russian Defence Ministry has been quite irritated at being left out of the planning of a major NATO offensive into what Moscow considers its back yard and has been calling for a Russian liaison to be added to the AZFOR command staff. Moscow is angrier still at China for what it perceived as 'Faustian' negotiations with Iran. On that note, UN Secretary General Tony Blair has been sharply critical of the total lack of coordination between AZFOR, Russia and China. He has described the situation as totally chaotic, especially with recent military tensions between the United States and China. "If the First Gulf War had been fought like this then we would have never won," said Blair during a Security Council meeting. "Two sides pursuing what is in effect two different wars is not constructive in this situation. China, Russia and the United States must act together or else this crisis might become worse than we thought." He further added that the conflicting plans and responses of the international community might add to Iran's resolve to fight it out. Regardless, it seems all three sides are well on their way to finalizing their preparations. Within the next few days all involved parties will be in a position to attack at their leisure. The European Union itself has never fought a war, and with the recent American-Sino crisis still fresh in many minds, most worry about having sufficient force to respond to threats 'at home'. There is stiff resistance against the involvement of military forces under the banner of the European Union that is unlikely to be overcome, however it's rather apparent that nobody will move to stop France from acting militarily on her own or in concert with willing allies. The 46-year-old beat Mr Mason by 134,446 votes to 41,398 in a postal ballot of Tory members across the UK. The current Home Secretary, an MP for twelve years, said the Tories must continue the work of the Brandt government and be in tune with today's Britain with a "modern compassionate Conservatism". Her defeated rival, Mr Mason, said the leadership contest had been a signal of Conservative unity in uncertain times. He hailed Ms Young as the perfect candidate to take the reigns from Dennis Brandt following his resignation, saying that the race had made the party and government look thoughtful and mature. The result ends a four-week wait. Outgoing leader and Prime Minister Dennis Brandt said he was quitting after April's local elections following a severe heart condition and two heart attacks. Sir Jonathon Spence, chairperson of the committee of Tory backbenchers, declared the election result at the Royal Academy in London. Party members were balloted weeks ago ahead of a series of televised debates and private hustings. Ms Young, 46, began the contest as the bookmakers' favourite and did not disappoint. Her passionate, hard line speech at the Conservative annual conference in Birmingham was well received, dealing what turned out to be a fatal blow to Mr Mason's second challenge for the leadership, No change As she celebrated victory, Ms Young said her party now had to continue the fantastic work of the former Prime Minister's government. She said she was "fed up with the squabble of modern British politics" and vowed to lead the government with a firm hand and an open ear. Her apparent no-nonsense approach, particularly in uncertain times with action in the Middle East, won her many supporters. The new Prime Minister has often been likened with the iconic Tory figure, Baroness Thatcher, most noticeably for being a Tory woman, but also for her passionate speeches and grassroots conservatism. Her soft English accent adds credence to the comparison, but Ms Young has been quick to dispense with the likeness, famously declaring during the election "I am a Young, not a Thatcher rite." Attention now falls to the Prime Ministers' first government, widely expected to encompass many faces from Mr Brandt's cabinet. Ms Young was a close ally of the Prime Minister, and it is not expected to mark any u-turns in current Conservative policy. She set out core challenges for her leadership in a victory speech at the Royal Academy: creating economic reforms; reforming the benefit system and getting more people into work; giving freedom to those on the frontline in public services; as well as pledging national and international security. She also pledged more funding for the overstretched and under funded armed forces that have to "do a difficult job in uncertain times". Ms Young is also expected to take a tough line on crime, preferring harsher jail terms and a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour. She is though, a supporter of rehabilitation, particularly for young offenders. On foreign policy, the new PM is expected to continue the re building of US relations, as well as try to work more closely with European allies. The PM is said to not be keen however on further EU integration. BBC political editor Stephen Gleeson said Ms Young's victory showed Tories were "harbouring a strong leader, someone people have perceived to be a tough conservative in difficult political times across the globe. This was more an election of character, than policies". Ms Young will be expected to form her government tomorrow after a meeting with the Queen in the morning. Actions: 1. Editor Martin Swain. 9000 TO 1000 BST The Brandt family's possessions are being loaded into a white lorry parked outside 10 Downing Street. "It's a vaguely humbling scene, in a sense, the departure of a prime minister," says Jon Watch, presenter of BBC One's The Politics Show. "There is no privacy to it. You see the possessions being taken out by the removal men, loaded into the back of the trucks. "I remember this from 24 years ago when Margaret Thatcher's removal men came in after she had been brutally brought down." 1000 TO 1100 BST BBC News 24's Matthew Johnson says Downing Street is rammed full of press and camera crews. The world's media have descended on No 10 to mark the end of Mr Brandt's 2 years in power. 1100 TO 1300 BST As Ms Young's car arrives at the Palace, Jonathon Spence - who is tipped as the person to replace her at the Home Office - gives his predictions about the new prime minister's reign to BBC News 24. "I think we are about to see a marked change in the media circus that surrounds the PM. I've worked with the Prime Minister on numerous occasions, she is a proud women, open to compromise, yet very firm. There is no spin about her; she is as honest as they come. She tells it like it is, to the press, to her ministers, to anyone. " In Ms Young's constituency in Oxfordshire, "there is a low-key celebration going on within the local Conservative Party", according to the BBC's Gordon Bishop. At Buckingham Palace, Ms Young's car has been replaced with a heavily armoured black Jaguar and six protection officers, BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Keller says on News 24. There is also a second security vehicle waiting for the new prime minister when she leaves the palace. Mrs Young and her husband leave the palace at 1248 BST. It is official - Britain has a new prime minister. Ms Young has spent over an hour with the Queen, the BBC learns. "They seem to be firm friends already," a correspondent jokes. "They didn't seem to want to leave each other's company." Back in Downing Street, Ms Young gives her first public speech as prime minister, paying tribute to Mr Brandt and promising to "lead with a firm hand and open ear" with "British interests at the heart." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Downing Street, outside Number 10] The world's media circuses were kept at bay by a security cordon and numerous armed police. Ms Young, the British Prime Minister, and her husband, had chosen to walk the short distance up the drive to their new home rather than be driven. She did not want to hide away in an armoured car; she would greet her foes in the media face to face, on her terms, outside of the famous address. A standing microphone stood in the middle of the drive, a few metres away from the famous door. The journalist and cameramen were a sea in front of it, clambering over each other to get pictures of the PM. Mrs Young walked toward the microphone calmly, smiling softly with her husband beside her. The slim woman wore a black skirt and black suite jacket with a white blouse, her chestnut coloured hair tied back, hiding the grey signs of a battle hardened the 46 year old. "Ladies and gentleman of the media," she spoke as she reached the microphone, in a soft, yet determined, easily recognisable British accent. The sea of journalists fell deafly quiet; almost as if by command. Her posture and mannerisms had an eerie way of commanding respect. "In fine tradition of this country, I have returned from Buckingham Palace after being given permission by Her Majesty to form a government," she began, hands coupled in front of her. "With this opportunity to lead, I take with me through that door," she gestured to No. 10. "... the hopes and aspirations of not only my party, nor my government, but of the people of the United Kingdom." "I will continue the fine work of Mr Brandt by extending his government into mine and delivering on the promises we made as a party to reform the country. We have fought long and hard together, and as a party, to bring about the change that Britain so desperately deserves and requires after years of mis-governance." "As a Prime Minister, I will bring hope, opportunity and security to every citizen of this country. I will endeavour, with my principles, beliefs and convictions to steer this great ship through times of trouble and uncertainty into greater prosperity. I will remain steadfast in my judgement and in the defence of the nation, standing up for our principles not just in Britain but across the globe, because I believe Britain to be a beacon of social justice and human rights." She made a brief pause. "Never again shall Britain be found wanting." "Britain is a nation of great opportunity and tolerance, the British people are special. Britain is special. And long may that continue." She smiled. "No aspiration is too great, no goal too high, and no leader more determined than I to reach our goals." "We must learn from past mistakes, and as a government we must listen. I will lead with a firm hand and an open ear. I will lead with determination. I will lead with honesty and open debate. But most importantly, I will lead with British interests at the heart." Ms Young raised her hands in a gesture of thanks to the media. "If you will excuse me," she refused to remain long for photo opportunities. "There is the business of government to be done." The Prime Minister paused for a few seconds by the door of number 10 with her husband for the photo oppurtunities, smiling and waving politely, before disappearing into the house as Britain's next Prime Minister. A woman that disliked party spin, she was determined to give the impression of a serious leader conducting serious business, and not that of a couch-friendly Prime Minister that dominated the media. Patricia Young, daughter of former Conservative MP for Oxford South and PPS to former Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe in 1987, David Young, Patricia had been a fierce campaigner for the Conservative Party from a young age. Without fault, she fitted the more traditional Tory image, having been educated in law at Jesus College, Cambridge, working as a barrister for 10 years before entering parliament in the 2001 general election. A staunch supporter of the Iron Lady's premiership in the eighties, Ms Young represented a slight shift in the Tory party, returning tentatively to grassroots conservatism. The Brandt government had gone a long way in providing stability for the country after a turbulent few years, managing the economy carefully since the 2010 recession. Young's role in her ally's government was that of Home Secretary, responsible for spearheading the governments push against violent crime and terrorism. She was chosen not only for her ability to appeal to the party base, but also for her "stiff upper lip", as many of her supporters would suggest. She was certainly a character in the Home Office, driven by her responsibilities and principles; she was on a crusade to fulfil her promises to the electorate as Home Secretary. Comparisons to the former Iron Lady, Ms Thatcher, are probably unfair to Ms Young. Although she is strong willed, determined and as 'hard as nails', the comparisons must cease there. Margaret Thatcher's time as Prime Minister was different to modern times; Young recognised that modern Britain did not want Thatcherism to return; they wanted a new kind of politics, but with a similarly strong leader. The hype over her being the second Tory, female Prime Minister will die eventually, and Ms Young's own legacy will be carved out. Nevertheless, not a woman to take to heart what the media portray her as, Young recognised that her business was to lead and not to perform in front of cameras. "Prime Minister," a voice filled a silent office as the large, beautifully finished wooden doors swept open to reveal the period furnishings. The PM's office, although equipped to a modern standard, still contained the beautiful decorations that reminded whoever worked there that the building had been at the heart of British government for centuries. The oak panelling and large, antique wooden desk, with floor to ceiling windows and heavy curtains were immaculately kept. The PM's sitting area to the side of her desk featured a sofa and coffee table of antique design, themselves years old. One only had to wonder at the cost of some of the furnishings and antiques within the address. Ms Young looked up from her desk where she had been scribbling away to see the face of a trusted aide and that of the cabinet secretary. "Mr James," Patricia smiled, placing her pen down. "Please, come in." The secretary walked toward the PM, stacks of papers over his arm and a red, tatty case in his hand. He placed the papers on the sofa before placing the red case with a leather cover that boasted the governments seal down beside her desk. The case was tatty, but had been in use for decades; it was tradition for all government papers to be kept locked away in red boxes, long before computers had taken over. In most cases, it was symbolic, but important papers were still carried by these boxes. "I have the morning papers, and the treasury documents you requested," he motioned toward the box. "The foreign secretary is also on his way from the foreign office, the US ambassador has requested a meeting at your earliest convenience and the cabinet meeting has been arranged for eleven." "Thank you," she glanced down at her desk. "Mr Taylor I believe is the US ambassador, and he would be most welcome to join discussions with the foreign secretary." She looked up at Mr James. "Just after I have spoken to the foreign secretary myself." "Out of the frying pan and into the fire," Mr James commented, as he prepared to leave the PM in peace so she could prepare for her daily meetings and cabinet. "Quite," the PM's softly spoken accent shone through. Her mannerisms did all that her voice did not; a commanding presence. "Not the easiest of first days for a Prime Minister, but nothing less than I was expecting." She glanced across at the papers on the sofa. "Thank you for the morning papers," she did not let on that she had been awake since 4AM working. "But I would rather read a select few at the end of the day, I have no dependence for the need to know what the media portray me as." The two finished their conversation with pleasantries, leaving the PM to her work. [Cabinet room, later that morning] As was convention, Ms Young had called a meeting of cabinet to discuss government actions. Having previously met with her aides, the US ambassador, and the foreign secretary earlier in the morning, she wished to address the cabinet. As was expected, Ms Young had not drastically changed the faces of the ministers that now sat before her at the cabinet table. She felt no need to change the direction of the government, albeit she had made a few new appointments to Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jonathon Spence and David Purchase respectively. A clever woman, she moved her allies closer to her, while having the sense to keep party unity. Ms Young had also felt it necessary, given the severity of international affairs at present, to leave the Foreign Office untouched. "Ladies and gentleman," Young began as she glanced at her papers before her. "Thank you for your attendance at such short notice," she gave a warm hearted smile. "May I begin with addressing the business at hand, I will start as I mean to go on in this job." The PM took a brief pause. "Having spoken at great length with the foreign secretary and various aides, including Mr Taylor the US ambassador, it is clear to me that not only do we as a government have a duty to the British people, but furthermore to those in peril across the world." Her comments were greeted by a few nods. "I fully support the efforts of the American and French governments toward the Iranian threat, and will be contacting their respective Presidents shortly. I feel that the United Kingdom must play a significant part in helping to broker peace and stability in the Middle East." "As such, I will continue to be in full support of Mr Brandt's decision to commit British forces to the region as a precautionary measure as well as for peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. As I understand it, a Royal Navy task force is already en route to the disputed region." She paused. "I will be brief; while I will support the actions of our allies to resolve the situation, I will only commit British forces into action as a last resort. Assurances will be made that it is not a decision that will be made lightly, and one, which will, while in dialogue not only with my ministers, this cabinet and the house but also with heads of government, be made to ensure long term peace in the region." The cabinet looked on as the self-proclaimed "serious" Prime Minister aligned herself to support the US. This was a woman that could not easily be fooled, and one, which could not easily be defeated. "I appreciate that there are numerous other situations that require our attention this morning, however if the cabinet will remain to hear an up to date briefing of the situation with Iran I would be very grateful." The PM's contrast of her serious attitude and determination with her politeness was well received, not only in her cabinet as is expected, but also with many voters. She was building her reputation daily. Ms Young looked across at her foreign secretary, Frances Urquart. "Mr Urquart if you could summarise what you told me earlier today." "Of course, Prime Minister," Mr Urquart shuffled the papers before him, putting on his glasses. "As we are all aware of the developing situation, Iran is still refusing to back down." He looked up. "Along with considerable US, French and other EU national armed forces already deployed to the area, Britain has pledged 8,000 combat troops, air support, and a Royal Navy task force consisting of the air carrier HMS Prince of Wales..." The foreign secretary continued to outline the positions of the various nations with respect to the situation. A discussion ensued, one that ultimately led to agreement with the PM. Actions. 1. Sentiment in the capital was largely stressed, but determined. People had come out and condemned Iran's unjust invasion from every corner of country, and mood was by and by the same on Parliament Hill. CSIS had done what it could with it's limited resources to supply the government with information. The commons had debated the issue and it was decided to join American-led coalition to oust Iran from Azerbaijan. Now was to be decided to contribution. Memorandums had gone around to the different military and defence staff, and the last reply had just come back. The consensus was that they could afford to send 3,000 troops and their attendant vehicles, supplies, and staff without overtly stretching the army. One destroyer and four frigates would be the naval commitment; and as for the air force, they said 15 CF-18's were in good enough condition for service. "Okay then. Sarah, I'm heading over to Bachman's office now." "Gotcha, have fun!" she smiled. Five minutes later, McColl was seated in Bachman's office. "So, here's the consensus on our contribution for the Azerbaijan mission. I need you to notify our respective allies and start the organizing." "Hmm, alright then." Julia said distractedly as she read the report. "Iran will be in a nasty spot of trouble. China on one side and NATO on other? Sucks to be them. But they deserve it I guess." "Yea I suppose they do. Although we don't know for certain that the Chinese are going in through Pakistan. We don't even know if we're going to stop at the Iranian border. Ask the other governments what the plan is for that too. Anyways, I have to go. Take care."... -------------------- Actions: 1) Detail Canada's commitment to Azerbaijan in the case NATO goes in to kick some Iranian ass. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This had been a problem for years, although no one had ever taken action to rectify it. He had also been told that of a study done several years ago that people with Dementia/Alzheimer's were being found to have spongiform-type brains, not unlike Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy [BSE]. Too much of a coincidence that people had been found to have a problem associated with cattle, the things that they were eating. Cows fed on meat products and suffering from BSE was one thing, but people? Nasty. Now, having some time to ponder this dilemma, he decided on his course of action. "Travis, get in touch with Health Canada and regulator for the cattle industry please. Tell them I would like a meeting with their respective heads. How about next Wednesday, 2pm? I'm not busy then. Reason given is to talk about cattle feed. And in the meantime, can you get me some more material to read up on this?" "Alrighty, anything else?" "No." After Travis [Kaczynzick's assistant] left, Gordon turned to his computer and began writing a memorandum to the PM. ------------------- Actions: 1) get the ball rolling to stop farmers feeding their cattle nasty meat products. ewww. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: "Meet the Press!" 15 June 2014 President John Williams USA ====== The "Meet The Press" fanfare began, a slower tempo than normal, as the camera faded in on the White House, then the Solarium - normally Luke's playroom lately, but now cleaned up for use as an interview room. Well, mostly. Tim Russert had to help find the toys everybody had missed. Not many, but the stuffed monkey had POTUS facepalming. Mom gathered up Luke - and Monkey - and carried them out as the voiceover faded. "Well, Mr. President. This is the Williams White House," Tim began, smiling. "Toyland. Not the -whole- White House, but this is normally Luke's playroom." "The West Wing is neater?" "Infinitely. I'm neat, by training if not habit; Kay is mostly neat. Luke has no clue of the concept yet," John said with a smile. "You were recently put on the DL, so to speak, by your physician. How are you now?" "In excellent health generally. My physical, as everybody knows by now, came back clean. The Presidency has its strains, and I forgot myself amidst dealing with the office. That involuntary vacation helped me find the balance again." "Why then did you expand the White House medical unit?" "Tim, the Medical Unit deals with the health of everybody who works here - from me to the newest intern to the lowest ranking Marine sentry. In part, it was necessity - when I noted that the psychological division had operational support duties, for example, I did mean that; we've needed psych support on negotiations for a while, particularly in a crisis. We've had it, but not internally to the White House. This *gives* me a comprehensive medical support staff that's used to White House routines. In part, it was simple modernization - if I wind up setting a trend, we'll simply need *more* than an internist to handle the health of a President and their family. Finally, this is a stress-filled job, with burnout being such an issue that most staff don't last more than 2 years. That's bad for the country. If an expanded medical unit serving everyone who works here can reduce that, say through physical training, psychological counseling to deal with stress, or simple help with diets, then it'll practically pay for itself." "Mr. President, what's the White House assessment of the situation with Iran?" "Tim...If you would, walk with me. I'd like to show, not just tell." The two got up and walked over to a table equipped with MS Surface, on which a map of the crisis area was displayed. A red overlay marked Iranian-held areas, and a green coloring marked unoccupied areas of Azerbaijan. Pictures appropriate to unit type marked Iranian units visible by commercial satellite imagery - what was safe to show on global TV. "Tim, right now, Iran controls the area shaded in red. Green areas are held by the Government of Azerbaijan. The yellow borders mark the international borders. The blue line is the route of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, which carries a million barrels of oil per day to Turkey, and from there to the world markets." "The Iranians seem dangerously close to it." "Yes. If they cut that pipeline, well, that's a million barrels a day off the world market, and a not-inconsequential amount of oil under the control of what can pretty easily be called a power hostile to the West. As has been indicated pretty firmly, that's not an outcome we or our allies are going to accept." "And yet you're not going immediately to war?" "I've seen war with my own eyes, Tim. I don't welcome it. I will give the Iranian government every chance to end this without violence. I will use every lever of economic and other pressure that I can to achieve our objectives. But Tim, it will be the Iranian government that chooses whether or not we engage in combat. If we do, then we will not be sparing in our efforts. We will fight clean, we will fight honorably, we will wage a just war...And we will fight to win indisputably." "And now, a brief break for our sponsors." --- Actions: 1. Tim Russert Lives. 2. THe Unitarian Universalist Coalition has voted to support Williams but hoping that diplomacy and peace prevails in the end, but acknowledge that "if Iran insists on actions against a peaceful neighbor, then force, regrettably, must be used." Congress has begun debate on an authorization for the use of force against Iran it's surprising to see Democrats and Republicans speaking together for something, though there are concerns about the duration and impact. In the UN the debate has begun, it seems to be moving towards approval, though several of the Middle Eastern states are concerned that this might broaden to hit them. the Council for American Islamic Relations has issued a statement calling on Williams to use 'restraint' against Iran and hopes this will not be another Iraq situation. Protestors have cropped up, Code Pink and several other anti war groups have been protesting outside the White House with their usual 'no blood for oil' placards, though the protests do not draw as many celebs, because let's face it it's Iran, who the hell likes Iran? John Williams, USA PM Patricia Young, UK "Gut check" 16th June 2014 ------------------------------ The odd journalist watched as the Prime Ministerial Jaguar rolled along Downing Street, stopping just short of number ten. The BBC had attended outside as well, possibly to cover an evening story on the British deployment to the Middle East. None the less, the PM stepped out of her car graciously, smartly dressed in her usual black skirt and suit jacket with a blue blouse. She smiled and waved at the photographers, carrying a few files under her left arm. She had left the commons select committee early to take an important call. As the PM approached the door of number ten, she smiled at the police officer outside. "Good Afternoon," she politely whispered as she walked past. The officer replied with a nod and a smile. Ms Young walked into the lobby to be greeted by a number of her aides standing by the antique grandfather clock near the fireplace. A mob of aides soon swamped her, as the 'group' walked along the corridor and toward the offices at the back of the house, the PM's high heels the only noise managing to out perform the busy noises of the offices that they walked past. "Your two o'clock with the work and pensions minister has been moved as requested," one aide rang out as he advised the PM on a revised schedule for the day. The middle aged, balding aide looked down at the schedule. "I took the liberty of moving the DWP minister to 4." Patricia smiled. "Thank you Gordon," she took the piece of paper from him as the 'mob' shrunk after receiving their orders from the PM. "How was the commons select committee?" The only remaining aide asked, as they walked along the corridor. "Very encouraging," Patricia replied as the pair approached her office. "We look set to get our way over the proposals for welfare reform." She opened the door and walked toward her desk, placing the papers she had been carrying down. "Mr Wilkins, the committee chairman is drawing up final proposals to be sent the department for Work and Pensions this afternoon," she picked up the phone from her desk holding it in her hand while remaining stood behind her desk. "We expect to be releasing a statement to the house on our revised plans later in the week." The PM was referring to a Tory proposed scheme to help curb the number of unemployed benefit claimants, and in the process re invest the money on getting them back into work. "Actually, Gordon, could you ask the DWP to get me a copy of them when they receive it, I will need it for the press conference," Gordon nodded at the request as he left the office, shutting the door firmly The PM simply smiled as she lifted the phone to her ear, waiting to be put through. In Washington, the President wasn't multitasking so much - at the moment. On his desk was a laptop, where he was reading the latest intel on Iran. London was going to be on speakerphone, and Luke was napping quietly a few feet away. "Mr. President, London calling." announced the WHCA tech. "Connect secure, Sergeant." A chitter could be heard on both ends as the connection was encrypted. "Madam Prime Minister," Williams greeted, "thanks for taking the time for this." Pause. "Pardon if I'm talking a bit softly. Luke is 10 feet from me, and I just put him down for a nap." As a concession to the sleeping baby (guarded by Gizmo, who was gnawing on a bone), Dad had a headset on to hear the PM. "Now...Iran." "I understand Mr President," the PM replied, slightly perplexed that the US President was 'babysitting'. "They're a lot easier to wake up at that age than at 16," she said, referring to her two teenage twins that still lived with her in number ten, the closest she would get to a joke. "Indeed, Iran," Young sat down at her desk. "I fully support the actions taken by your government against Iran," she paused. "A regime such as theirs cannot be allowed to set such a dangerous precedent, it would be to our embarrassment if we failed to stop Iran's gamble from paying off." The PM crossed her legs, leaning back in her chair and swivelling to face the window. "Forgive me for being blunt, but I feel we ought to be open from the beginning. If military action is necessary to remove Iran from Azerbaijan, I will not be found wanting," she said getting to the point, over looking the horse guard parade ground at the rear of number ten as she spoke. Young knew that any threat's toward Iran would have to be followed through, but determined as she was, her heart did sink at the thought of another conflict involving British troops in the Middle East. Nonetheless, she would do what she thought necessary and what she thought was right. "They're only this young once," Williams noted in explanation. "Besides, he only occasionally tries to gnaw on the Resolute desk when he comes by the West Wing." A pause, as Young spoke on Iran. "That's the thought over here; I'm the reluctant one, probably because I've actually faced Iranian bullets. "Nonetheless, good to hear it reaffirmed. I'm going to do what I can to exhaust the diplomatic options; I don't see it working out, but I'm not going to make the mistake Bush did, and go directly to the shooting. "Still, your comments on the resolution we put forward? And, any expansion on the press reports of your deployment of the Queen Elizabeth battlegroup?" "I would always hope that before a shot is fired all diplomatic efforts are exhausted, and you have my full support in that respect," Young picked up a pen off her desk, twirling it in her hand as she spoke. "The British ambassador to the UN will signal our support for the resolution this afternoon." "As to the British maritime contribution to the operation, the Queen Elizabeth and Ocean has been dispatched alongside the surface combatants Daring, Dauntless, Richmond, Westminster and the submarines Astute, Splendid and Ambush, with the various RFA vessels. The Admiralty will be diverting a second wave of ships to the region that will leave Portsmouth tomorrow," Young remembered perfectly. "The MoD will contact the pentagon immediately to inform you the full extent of the British deployment." "There is though another issue I wish to speak to you about," Young paused. "British intelligence is adamant in it's claim that Iran does not have a nuclear capability, however, I want to seek assurances that any information that comes to light and that is relevant to the situation is shared, in full. I can give assurances that MI6 is already doing so," the PM chose her words carefully. "Forgive me for being blunt, but I have to have these assurances. Young had been somewhat upfront in her asking, but no rudeness was intended or imparted. It was merely her way - straight to the point. Williams actually chuckled. "You hardly need to - I'm clubbing the intel community on that daily, just to make sure they get it. You'll have the Station Chief in London briefing MI6 twice daily, above and beyond their usual meetings. "For the record, our analysis is similar - a possibility, but not a likely nuclear capability. However: "Expect this campaign to be bloody. I need you to prepare the UK populace for that - there *will* be flag-draped caskets. I remember how nobody seemed to do that in Afghanistan. Think casualty counts in the thousands, then tell me if you can get the country to stay with you if things are that bad. "We know the Iranians at one point had chemical weapons. We're going to be posing a direct threat to the current government if we go in. Which is part of the point, really. So we have to be prepared the Iranians will -use- that CW capability. "You know what happens if they do?" His voice was soft and serious, as if explaining terminal cancer to the PM. Patricia drew a deep breath. "I fully understand the consequences." She thought for a moment. "Britain has a very proud population, a population outraged by the actions of Iran and one not easily intimidated. The international community has an obligation to act, and while I am painfully aware that the deployment of British troops to the Middle East evokes... hurtful memories for some, we go into this with no smoke screen. No propaganda." Young paused to take a breath. "I am no General, but if war breaks out with Iran we will have to use our superior power to effectively 'cut their head' off, disorganise their government and target all known locations for weapon depots and eliminate any potential chemical weapon ability." "We have to be prepared to act swiftly and with force to reduce casualties, both military and civilian," the PM continued to look out of her window, painfully aware of the consequences if military action turned sour. "I'm not going to pretend it will be easy, I'm not going to lie to the public." "There is no doubt though that the world will be a far safer place if we are successful. Of course, I have to remain committed to diplomatic solutions first and foremost, but..." she searched for the right words. "It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we may have exhausted all diplomatic options open to us." "Not me you need to convince, but the guy in the street. They, unfortunately, have every reason to be wary of this being a rerun," Williams noted. "One of the, uh...things we hate to mention is just what happens if the other guy uses chemical weapons," Williams mentioned, then paused. "A gas is a germ is a nuke, in short. NATO doctrine, precisely because we do -not- use chemical or biological weapons, is to authorize nuclear weapons release. It's something the briefers leave out unless you prod, because it's terrifying, even to those used to thinking in terms of megadeaths. "Moving on: Do you plan on contributing any land forces?" "Yes," Young thought for a moment. "Eight thousand have been dispatched, along with significant air power from the RAF. Your defence staff will have a full battle order of British forces as soon as the MoD has issued full deployment orders today." "My foreign secretary will be doing the rounds in the EU attempting to shore up increased pressure against Iran aswell - I will personally meet with the German Chancellor in an attempt to get the Germans to contribute forces if necessary. I also hope to meet with the French President soon." "But Mr Williams," the PM paused for thought. "I hope that we are agreed that the consideration of nuclear weapons has to be an option only in case of nuclear threat from Iran. The repercussions of using nuclear weapons, even in retaliation for chemical weapons, would be... disastrous." Patricia's quaint English accent shone through in her voice. "Believe me, you hardly need to mention that. I keep a guesstimate of casualty totals with every plan in the football, just so its not theoretical. We are agreed. Screw the politics, I have enough blood on my conscience. Baku ain't really worth megadeaths." Young drew a deep breath. "Quite, quite indeed. May history be kind to us both." She said as she wrapped up the conversation, taking in her surroundings. Her office had been used by many Prime Ministers before her, and surely many would use it after. Nonetheless, there was an overwhelming sense that history had been made in this room, not realising she was making history her very self. ==== Actions: 1. John Williams USA ================ As Marine One flew into the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, John Williams looked over the...What the hell do you call it? he thought. Pine Ridge was not the shining example of America, no matter what the hell you called it, he decided. As the helo set down, he looked out one more time. He'd asked residents to come as they were, no need for formality. And come they had. National Guard medical units had had to set up tents to take in the hundreds of people who'd showed up, overflowing the small conference center on the Reservation. He'd had to redirect the Secret Service...from protection to crowd control. 20 minutes later, after all the ceremony the tribe could muster (at their insistence, even after he'd begged them not to that morning, considering the heat's effects on the crowds), he was inside. The usual introductions...almost like any campaign stop. Then, Williams looked out over the crowds. Into the cameras. "And that will be all the formality I can take," he began. "Ladies and Gentlemen, I wanted to thank you for the photos that were mailed, emailed...in some cases hand-drawn by some very artistically talented kids here. "I want the media to take a look, too. It ain't pretty, but it's the life you lead. So if you will, a slide show. To, so to speak, define the situation. No censorship, no punches pulled, this is Pine Ridge." As his bodyman worked the slide projector, the media zoomed in. It made good copy. The pictures were heart-wrenching. Pine Ridge, let's be frank, bore an uncomfortable resemblance to a Third World slum in a lot of places. "I can think of a lot of words to describe these pictures. But I don't need any. America, look upon your forgotten. See them as they are," Williams said. Then the slide projector went off, and the lights inside went up. "Let's skip the verbiage. My task here is simple: I cannot give you everything you want. Even if I could, I'm not sure I would. Not because 'struggle makes you noble' or that sort of blather, but because I'm not about to do handouts. I don't want for the Native American communities of this country to keep coming to Washington, begging for crumbs from Congress. Hoping you get high-level attention...Because let's be honest, it's not the work of a few weeks, a few months, or a few -years- to fix what's wrong here and in so many other reservations...It's the work of decades. "Decades of work, starting now." He spoke for a bit more - of what the federal government could and couldn't do - and of the necessity of focusing on the basics, the simplest stuff to get Congress to agree on.so that money can be appropriated. But then came their turn. "Now, your turn to talk. Tell me about your issues. Give me ideas. What can *you* do, and what can the federal government do to help you achieve those objectives?" She was sitting on the embankment behind her office with Jacques le Mieux, the Industry Minister. He had to take a few seconds to find the right words; "Pat, would I love to see the HBC back in Canadienne hands too, but that could be a pretty... how do you say? lengthy, process." Jacques had a pretty heavy Quebecois accent, so she had to work a bit to get at what he was saying. "Well then better get started don't you think?" He laughed. "You're serious?" "Dam straight I am. Numbers from a survey of citizens from across the country about inflation. The Ministry had been doing some research on inflation within Canada for some time, and now it was finished, and time to act. Tomorrow, the deputy Minister of Finance was set to address the Board of Directors and put pressure on them to drastically the inflation rate of 5.6%. Apparently the Bank had been slacking, as its written goal is to have inflation rates of between 1-3% annually. The Deputy Minister was going to suggest such measures such as reducing growth of the money supply and a return to a more controlled environment where the bank had higher interest rates. In conjunction with this, the government was prepared to introduce various financial incentives business to offset the effects of the banks actions. "Would the Prime Minister please explain why Japan is asking two-thousand of its sons and daughters to go into danger? Respectfully, we find this lack of explanation to be insulting to our troops and this body, and Japan," the Defence Critic Hideo Iwamura asked from his place on the diet floor. Sato, rose to his feet, nodding to the speaker. "In response to Iwamura-san's question, I would think the why is obvious, however as the opposition requires explanation, I shall of course grant them that," Sato cleared his throat as a few of the other ministers shifted in their seats. There was no doubt their boss was in a bit of a grumpy mood in late, though this was the first time that it had manifested on the floor of the Diet. Sato continued. "Iran's expansionist policies must be stopped. The international community has examined their causes for war, the supposed Kurdish camps, and found them wanting. It is therefore clear that the war is about oil, the single most valuable commodity on the planet, and one vital for Japanese survival. Already we have seen fuel prices skyrocket in this country, bringing with it a spike in the price of everything else. Our people cannot afford for this to continue. So if Iran is not stopped in Azerbaijan then what will stop them from blockading the Straight of Hormuz next and blocking the flow of billions of barrels of oil to Japan and the rest of the world? I admit, that as lofty ideals go, a war for oil is a poor excuse, however, in the end if the Iranians are not stopped today, the stability of the whole world may suffer, and for that, Japan, a nation now dedicated to peace, must act, or our talk of peace enshrined in our constitution is nothing more than words." Sato paused seeming to gather his thoughts and remember where he was, and what the protocols were. "I would also like to respectfully remind the opposition, that we are not sending these men to war, but we are sending them to keep the peace in a region disrupted by the Iranians, and filling the places of our allies who will carry the war to Iran. As that is all that has been authorized by this body, except for the naval contribution, which may indeed see fighting, made legal by the vote of the Diet, so, I ask, Mr. Speaker, what is unclear and if I may, how was the opposition, our troops, or this body insulted by assuming they had the wits to discern this for themselves. Prime Minister Jack Decker Australia June 16 2014 ??and it?s seven o?clock, the temperature outside is currently three degrees here in our Canberra studio. Coming out now, are the news headlines for this Monday June 16?? Jack Decker lashed out, and hit the button on the clock radio. He rolled over to kiss his wife, but found an empty space. She was always up early, to get the kids up and moving. He groaned and lifted his sleepy head from the pillow, looking around. Seven? Lisa had been messing with his clock again. He rose, and padded into the bathroom, reaching into the shower and turning the hot water on. He pulled his pyjamas and looked at himself in the mirror. He was getting lazy, he thought as he tapped his belly. Not too bad, but he had to be mindful of it. He stepped into the shower, and smiled as the hot water cascaded over his body. The only problem with Canberra in June was the cold, which meant that if you jumped into the shower you?d get that needle sensation all over you. He remembered a school trip when they?d pulled into Alice Springs at five in the morning, all raced into the showers, and then all screamed at the sensation. But Jack couldn?t complain. Between serving on ships in the tropical northern waters, and in embassies in the Middle East, it was time to deal with the cold. He dressed in his suit trousers and shirt, and stuck his tie in his pocket as he walked from his bedroom towards the kitchen. The Prime Minister?s Lodge in Canberra had a small staff of six, two chefs, a childminder, and three house attendants. For the most part, the chefs were only on when there were functions or visitors. Jack and Lisa still liked to do their own cooking when they could. Jack and Lisa had four kids. The twins, Michael and Jennifer, were seventeen, quickly approaching eighteen, and in their final year of high school. Thomas was fifteen, and last but not least was Anna, at eleven years old. When Jack entered the kitchen he saw Jennifer and Anna sitting at the table, and Thomas was standing by the toaster. The distant sound of running water told Jack where Michael was. ?Morning all.? ?Hi Dad.? Came the monotone reply. Decker walked over to the table and picked up The Australian newspaper that was there. The headline was CAUCASUS TINDERBOX, as the world prepared to send troops into the region to intervene in Iran?s invasion of Azerbaijan. Decker was announcing today that the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, along with an SASR component, would be deploying to the area. The HMAS Perth and HMAS Newcastle were also deploying to the Persian Gulf, to take part in an Allied exercise in the area to rattle some sabres at Iran, and assist with the embargo operations. ?You want some toast Dad?? Thomas asked as he took his out. ?Yeah, thanks.? Jack said, putting the paper back down as Lisa walked in, smiling. ?Hey beautiful.? Jack said, putting an arm around his wife?s waist and kissing her on the cheek. ?Morning.? ?You fiddled with my clock again.? ?What does it matter? 6.30 or 7?? ?Then why fiddle with it?? ?You are so anal!? She replied, kissing him again. Decker had his toast, and a cup of tea, and by then two men in suits entered the kitchen. ?Morning officers.? Decker said with a smile, and quickly ducked upstairs to finish getting dressed. The two officers were from the Australian Federal Police?s Protective Service. Decker returned downstairs, and grabbed his briefcase. ?Have a good day.? Decker said, kissing his wife and daughters, and giving his sons a scruff. They were past the age of kisses. "Good luck with the announcement." Lisa added. Most of Parliament were aware of the decision by now, and in Australia, major foreign policy debates were rare, most people would agree that Iran couldn't get away with their invasion. Decker headed outside to the white Commodore Statesman, and he got into the back. And with that, another day began? Actions: 1. General introduction to the PM. 2. However, the PM had been anxious to get one last item out of his agenda before the summer season swallowed MP's. He had thus summoned everyone back for one last debate. He wanted people to chew on it over the summer and come back to it in the fall. The last couple of weeks had been spent planning for the Azerbaijan mission as well as that item, one key to the PM's political agenda: protecting key industries from foreign takeovers. The last 20 or so years since NAFTA had come into effect had seen literally more than ten thousand Canadian businesses taken over by foreigners, mainly by Americans. Everything from mining companies, to steel, to oil, high tech, it was all under foreign control. Chretien, Paul Martin, Stephen Harper, none of them had done anything. So now it was McColl's turn, was he going to let the country be sold out? He didn't think so, no. The media had coined a phrase years ago about the 'Hollowing out of Corporate Canada.' He thought it was time to set that to rights. The impetus for this had built up over the years, until it had got to the point where the general public had been up in arms last year about the breakup and sale of one of the large oil companies, Suncor Inc. That had helped McColl sweep to power, as he had promised to do something about it in his election campaign. The bill had clauses establishing a special board and committee for the purpose of investigating foreign takeover bids and was closing down the old one. They would have rigorous criteria that would make foreign takeovers much harder. It also reaffirmed the takeover control over the 'Big Five banks to keep them in Canadian hands, and listed industries ranging from Petro-Canada and various other oil and gas corporations to mining companies like Barrick Gold and Teck Cominco to high tech, agriculture, forestry, transportation, telecommunications, nuclear energy, and defence. All these sectors had key corporations that were to be protected. All had been researched and were considered vital to Canada either strategically and/or economically. Of course, the bill would not protect entire sectors of the economy, but rather certain key corporations. This would still leave room for foreign investment if it was deemed beneficial to the nation, not just for investors. However, just because the bill was giving these corporations takeover protection didn't mean they were getting off scott-free. No. They would have to meet rigorous environmental emissions standards, which although costly, the government was prepared to help with. They would also have to contribute a small amount each year to a fund which would go toward funding infrastructure upgrades in cities across the country. The bill was due to be read the next day in the house, and McColl was aware many MP's wanted to go tend to their summer duties, so he was prepared to hurry it along a little. All in All, McColl was pretty happy with it, and was hoping the public would react benignly. -------------- Actions: 1] protect key corporations from foreign takeovers 2] fulfill election promises 3] little bit of summer mischief -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They've war-gamed various situations since the Iran Crisis began. Iran's latest refusal and unsatisfactory counter-offer... made as a 'final offer' was an insult that wouldn't be tolerated by the Ministry of State Affairs, and certainly would not be well tolerated by the People's Republic. The world had warned them... now Iran would feel pain. "The Highland Motarized Division, along with the 50th, 51st, and 52nd Mountain Infantry brigades have received orders to prepare for departure. They returned as part of the recent scale-down of forces in North Korea, having been replaced by NKA units. They're combat hardened and high quality soldiers, necessary for any invasion into Iran we may take over the Pakistani border." The General in charge of this operation, a man by the name of Qianwen Bao explained. "The Pakistani Army is making it's Frontier Force, a paramilitary group which patrols it's border regions between Afghanistan and Iran, available to us for force protection purposes. We've also begun receiving orders from the Pakistani government for military equipment, and I have been assured by the industries involved that they will give the orders their highest priority." Xia nodded. At least the General 'seemed' to have all his ducks in a row. "What forces will be supporting the assault?" The Fleet and Air Marshalls both nodded to him, indicating their last agreement to be satisfactory to all sides. "The PLN will deploy the Marine Corps and supporting personnel, particularly engineers, EOD and demolitions technicians, communications specialists, and medical personnel. The PLAF will be sending the entirety of the 16th Airborne Corps, comprising the 46th, 47th, and 48th Airborne divisions. While the Mountain brigades have crossed the border and established a toe hold, the Airborne forces will drop on key locations, working with our special forces to capture enemy air fields and key strategic areas, particularly Iranian oil fields. The Marine Corps and the 1st and 124th Amphibious Mechanized Divisions will seize key ports and capture or destroy the Iranian Naval and security forces in the area of their major ports. Air support will be provided by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Fighter Divisions, 4th Independent Regiment, the 22nd Attack Division, the 8th Bomber Division, and the newly formed 1st Operational Support Division. It will be a substantial devotion of assets... over 250 aircraft all tolled. The 7th Fighter division will also be deployed to Pakistan to begin familiarizing their pilots with the J-10, at their request." Xia nodded. It was fair after all. "How large is their initial aircraft requirement?" "They're asking to buy 72." General Bao responded. "60 front line and 12 attrition aircraft. They would also like to put an option on an additional 28 if and when funding becomes available." Xia nodded. It was a substantial request, but a stronger Pakistan was in China's long-term interests. "Once initial objectives have been met, and access into the country is gained, the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions as well as the 3rd and 4rth Armored brigades will be landed. They will be supported by the 112th, 113th, and 114th Mechanized Divisions, and supporting reserve troops. Total deployment will be approximately 250,000 Troops. We believe Iran's capacity to defend itself, with so many of it's troops committed to defense against a NATO assault outside of the country, will be severely compromised in the face of a major attack. We should be in a position to take Tehran in 10 days from the initial assault." "It should be noted that casualty projections are as high as 20%." Bing looked over to Xia. She had to understand exactly what they were doing here. "Our men are well trained and armed, and they have experience in urban fighting as well as conventional warfare, but the Iranians have always historically used human waves to thwart attacks. We need to be prepared to lose as many as 50,000 troops to take that country, and we may need to be prepared to see as many as 600,000 Iranians killed... or more... before Tehran falls." "Post war scenario?" She asked, the enormity of the situation not escaping her at all. "We're going to need a post-war occupation force of at least half a million. Possibly for as long as two years. It's going to be a strain undoubtedly, but your Ministers and the military all agree that it is a feasible option. Like North Korea, we will have to support the development of a local government and local control until they can take over. And you know the West, especially Williams, will be crying bloody murder about 'Internationalizing' the Operation. America is only concerned about Iranian aggression in so far as it interferes with petrol prices." She knew, and she didn't care. Her pen drummed against the desk as she considered the options available to her. "How does this play out?" "After initial objectives are secured and reinforcements landed, our forces are divided into two. One force heads for Tehran, the other to the border to capture or destroy any and all Iranian military forces attempting to escape the NATO invasion. This guarantees that Iran will not go on the offensive again." But was that 'really' worth 50,000 Chinese lives? The Americans and Europeans could bleed themselves stupid for oil. She wasn't the one who would have to explain to loved ones some stupid excuse about how oil wasn't the reason they died. "And 'if' we go ahead with the invasion, how do we know the Europeans and the Americans won't fire on our soldiers?" "We don't." General Bao answered succinctly. "But our IFF transponders are unique, and we will be setting a specific frequency for this operation which will be passed on to the Pentagon and the European Defense ministries. It's the best we can do." She nodded. "General... prepare for your invasion, but do not engage without my specific, confirmed authorization." He nodded, and the meeting was adjourned. ===================================================== ACTIONS 1. Summer in DC was boring. Canadians thinking NAFTA didn't apply to them, trying to protect their companies from takeover. Yes, yes, globalization was mean, and said not-nice things about a country's level of control over its own destiny. However, trying to avoid it as Canada was trying to do did break treaties. And that was worse. NAFTA held the economy of several Canadian provinces together. NAFTA held North American trade together, *period*. So the US was going to be rational and adult in its response to an irrational and childish action. It was going to file a lawsuit in the relevant NAFTA tribunal, seeking an injunction against the provisions of the anti-takeover legislation...And seeking permission for countervailing duties...Which would rack up in the billions of dollars. Also, the State Department would excoriate Canada for inflaming a petty trade issue when there were troops about to go into action against Iran - not quite a stab in the back, but certainly unhelpful and unnecessary, Congress would get a quiet shrug of nonchalance when it roared for an equal beating of the Canadians. The White House was working with the Hill to keep the rhetoric sane and measured. But if the Canadians really wanted a trade war, a trade war they would get. --- Actions: 1. File lawsuit with NAFTA tribunal re Canadian anti-takeover legislation. 10,000 pages and counting. 2. State to slam Canada for doing this when there are troops readying for war with Iran. 3. Congress advised to keep the rhetoric sane and controlled. Don't start talkin stupid. 4. You want a trade war, bub? Ya got one. News Agencies were always a good source of basic intelligence, and news broadcasts from Canada as well as the States were covering, as Xinhua was, the growing 'NAFTA Rift'. It was only a matter of time before one of the major trading partners became unhappy with the deal... she did 'not' see it being Canada though, that was a bit of a surprise. This being said, it certainly wasn't an unwelcomed one. China and Canada shared trading before. Canadian high-technology and raw materials was always a great commodity for China, and likewise cheap Chinese goods kept Canadian manufacturers in business, and kept Canadian citizens happy and well stocked. It was an equal trading partnership between two, economically well positioned companies. Now with the US threatening litigation, it was a good time to seek to strengthen the mutually beneficial partnership. FROM: Office of the President- Executive Residence, People's Republic of China TO: Office of the Prime Minister- Canada CC: Office of the Ambassador: Embassy of Canada, Beijing; Parliament of Canada, RE: Matters of Mutual Concern EC: STD Beijing-Ottawa Protocol Dear Prime Minister, Ambassador, and Honored Members of Parliament: Recent events have shined light on matters of mutual concern for Canada and the People's Republic. This communique is intended to discuss several such matters, and should by no means be considered as a sole source of matters of interest to the People's Republic of China. Should your government, at any time, wish to expand upon the bases set forth in this letter, we invite Canadian input on all matters and stand ready to discuss all subjects openly. First, of the most immediate importance, your Government through NATO will undoubtedly be soon hearing of China's commitment to possible military actions against Iran. Should it be necessary to engage in warfare, please be assured all precautions will be taken to eliminate any possible hazards to Canadian troops from the armed forces of the People's Republic. This effort would be greatly enhanced by the inclusion of Chinese advisors with NATO planners, but to date such inquiries to the United States have only yielded negative results. You can expect to be fully informed of China's activities, should an invasion appear imminent. Canadian advisors and observers are absolutely welcomed to join Chinese units, should the Prime Minister feel such actions beneficial. Our respective Ministries of Defense can undoubtedly make satisfactory agreements in this regard should you be interested. Any and all advice Canada may wish to offer, or any and all concerns the Prime Minister may retain with regards to Iran, are welcomed. Secondly, as reported in major news outlets, we are aware of your recent economic disagreement with the United States of America. President Williams has in the past caused a great deal of consternation for the People's Republic in regards to economic factors, leading to the arrest and subsequent conviction of American agents within China, spying apparently for the economic benefit of the United States. Litigation to solve problems that China feels better resolved through diplomacy and negotiation, is apparently a favored tactic of the United States. We hope the Prime Minister and the Canadian Government does not lose much sleep over this latest display of American economic belligerence. Likewise, allow me this opportunity to highlight recent work with your Government. The previous administration was very fair in it's trading practices with China, as can be demonstrated by the recent purchase by China of CANDU nuclear reactors and continued exchanges of manufactured products. The People's Republic considers Canada an important trading partner, who's concerns must be held equal to any other country's. This said, I would like to take this opportunity to extend to you an invitation for discussions regarding setting a framework for fair economic relations between our nations. Access to Canadian goods will be of great advantage to China, and likewise we feel that an improved flow of Chinese goods into Canada will be of benefit to Canada's citizens who continue to face rising prices of common items. Particularly, the People's Republic is interested in acquiring access to Canada's green technologies industry, as environmental concerns are given the highest domestic priority. It is a known fact that Canada is a global leader in this field. Finally, military matters aside from a possible pending Iranian action must be considered. In this regard, China would like to make formal inquiries regarding the possibility of joint military exercises. The Pearson Center for Peacekeeping is a renown global authority on the subject, and the PLA's strategic planners have come to see stabilization and peacekeeping operations as a growing theater of concern. We believe Canada, as a respected international peacekeeping contributor, can provide much in the way of new lessons for our troops committed to operations in North Korea, and possibly Iran. Canada's recent interest in military expansion is a source of confusion for China. China understands and certainly respects Canada's right to defend itself, and recognizes the need for a modern, flexible fighting force to do so. The scope of these advances raises legitimate questions over Canada's intentions though, and should it please the Prime Minister, China will await further clarification from the Prime Minister. The People's Republic respectfully requests an audience with the Prime Minister or other appointed member of government at his convenience to establish a formal dialogue on these matters, and more. Sincerely, Xia Hong- President of The People's Republic of China ====================================================================== ACTIONS 1. As well, I want you to arrange private appointments for me with the ambassadors from China, Japan, South Korea, and the EU nations. Keep the reason a surprise." "Of course ma'am, I'll let you know as soon as I have information regarding." The aid scurried off. Bachman scowled, and her cell-phone rang. "Hello?" "Julia, it's me, James. Can we meet for lunch?" asked the PM. "Of course, where were you thinking? The Italian place?" she asked. "Yea, that nice Italian place we went before. 1:00?" "Sure, see ya then." She hung up. 2 hours later they were seated, the security people were happy, and the waiter had nervously taken their order. Julia began. "So what's on your mind?" "Oh, I think you know exactly what's on my mind. The Americans. Did you see CNN?" he chuckled and help up a hand as she spluttered. "They're up in arms Julia. But of course you already knew that too. No, they want to take this to those tribunals with NAFTA. They're reacting measuredly. When you meet those ambassadors, I want you to tell them we're interested in expanding trade with those countries, in a big way. As in-" "James," she said in a calm voice, "I was already going to tell them that. No need to worry." "Oh, and if the State Department comes after us, tell them to respect their neighbours more." McColl stated matter-of-factly. The lunch finished quietly, and they went their separate ways back to work for the afternoon. After a conferrence call between the ministers, it was decided to play along with the American injunction. They would state all the grievances that Canada had suffered with NAFTA, and that it was time to either re-negotiate NAFTA or end the dalliance. On top of that, they would seek the remaining reparations for the softwood lumber dispute and cattle import bans. McColl had talked to the Industry Minister as well, and they had agreed to pull strings with the oil industry to reactivate the old pipeline dating from Trudeau's NEP from Manitoba into Quebec, where it would be connected to the cities and ports along the St. Lawrence and east coast. And the Minister wanted it done with some speed too. --------------------- Actions: 1]Tit for tat -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I imagine your government is very excited, as China has much to gain in this potential deepening of Canada's and China's relationship. I hope you find this response satisfactory. I must say that I was rather shocked at the quickness of your response in sending your letter. However, I do realize that China and the United States are rivals in every sense of the word. The recent crisis in Korea has illustrated just this. However, we have newer events to deal with now. Especially the now-developing crisis regarding Iran. As you said, we are now aware that China may be committing forces to a possible war with Tehran. We welcome increased communication between Canadian and Chinese commanders, and hope that this will bear fruit down the road. Be assured, we will also keep you fully apprised of any and all Canadian activities on the battlefield, to reduce any possible confusion. However, we cannot in good conscience allow Chinese observers, either in NATO or with our own troops for our own security reasons. I am sure you understand. As to our economic tiff with the Americans, it was only a matter of time. The scale of our own economy compared to theirs was bound to create problems and this is the culmination of that. This government has decided that it is long overdue to take measures to protect our economy, lest we lose complete control to the American investment and financial juggernaught. Canada is indeed interested in diversifying our trading partners and reducing our dependence on the United States, and I hope that China may help contribute to this goal by increased trade relations. We are prepared to allow Chinese access to green energy technology, as we all stand in the long term to benefit from environmental awareness and action in reduction in pollution emissions. Canada is proud to help China in this regard. We are also interested in the acquisition of dependable sources of affordable consumer goods, as every Canadian citizen is hurt by high prices of goods. Canada's expertise in the nuclear industry is also another positive in our relations. We hope to continue our mutual work in this regard. My Foreign Minister, Julia Bachman, has arranged a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador here in Ottawa. Hopefully this will be the first of many such useful, positive, and mutually beneficial meetings. I'm sure that satisfactory arrangements can be made. Perhaps our respective agencies could meet and begin negotiations? With regards to our recent military expenditures: Canada has long been far too dependent on the Americans in many regards, one such being the military. We are thus interested in expanding our own capabilities to reduce foreign dependence. We are also seeking to increase our capabilities to defend ourselves and substantiate our claims to certain territories. I hope that this does not cause the People's Republic consternation. Prime Minister Jack Decker June 25 2014 Australia The government fleet sedan pulled up, and Decker climbed out. His Chief of Staff, Lucas McAvoy, was waiting. ?Morning boss.? ?Lucas.? Decker said, rubbing his eyes and following Lucas into Parliament House. ?You look a little tired.? Decker just shrugged it off. ?I?m fine. What?s on for today?? ?You?ve got a meeting with Peter King.? ?On what?? ?Delays to our delivery of the F-35.? ?Again? We were meant to have those last year.? He sighed. ?They were experimental when we purchased them, there?s a few kinks. Our pilots are over there now learning them, so it?ll be within the next month or two. Hell, we?re not the only ones waiting, the Yanks, Brits, Italians, Turks?the list goes on.? ?Ok, after that?? ?Admiral Flynn is coming in to talk about Azerbaijan, where are forces will be, who is in charge, who they answer to, how they take part in the task force?? ?What is this, military day?? Decker asked with a chuckle. ?You then have to approve your next electorate newsletter.? ?Pictures of me with my arm around a sheep?? ?That was your electoral predecessor.? Lucas said with a grin. ?Following that?? ?You have an early lunch with some people planning the US-Canada trip, a few last minute details.? ?Last minute is right, it?s two weeks away.? ?After Question Time I think you should see some people from your old stomping ground.? Lucas said as they reached the Prime Minister?s office. ?Morning Carol.? Decker said with a smile, and then turned back to Lucas as they entered his inner office. ?Why?s that?? ?Some Chinese-Canadian correspondence.? Lucas said neutrally. Decker turned. ?What the hell does that mean?? Lucas waved his hands. ?Woooooo.? ?Spooks?? ?Yeah, Defence Signals plucked something out of the air.? ?What did they say?? ?It appears that Canada has some issues with NAFTA. China is taking advantage of that.? ?Ok. Get a few bodies from DFAT, and Steve Costakis.? He said, referring to the Trade Minister. ?And see if there?s someone at the Office of National Assessments who has some clue about this stuff.? ?You got it.? ?And I want to see Mary-Anne Finnigan after Question Time as well, she?s got an early draft on some legislation for the whole Centrelink mess.? ?Ok?? ?And you owe me twenty-four stubbies of Coopers Pale.? Lucas let his notepad fall by his side. ?Come on, are you serious?? ?A bet?s a bet, Lucas. Your mighty Pies were taken to town by the Catters.? For those who wouldn?t have known what they were talking about, it was Australian Rules football. ?Your Cats are starting to come back.? Lucas added. The Cats had struggled. After winning back to back Premierships in 2007 and 2008, they had had to go through a rebuilding phase, as their dual-premiership players retired. ?Damn right, go to love the father-son rule.? ?Something to be mindful of when you?re in the States, sir. The last time a PM visited he was a Queenslander, who thoughts rugby was football. Now they?re going to be more confused because you know which football is the REAL football.? ?Even then, they?ll just think I?m talking about soccer.? Decker said, clicking his tongue and shaking his head. ?So, next time we make it a longer trip, you sit down at Camp David and lay it out.? ?Always tell them it?s a lot like basketball but you use your feet?? Decker offered unhelpfully. ?Yeah, because that?s not confusing at all!? Lucas said sarcastically. There was a knock on the door, and Carol entered. ?Defence Minister King his here.? ?Thanks Carol. Could you track me down a cup of coffee, and something to nibble on? I only had toast for breakfast.? Carol nodded, and walked out, as Peter King walked in. King was a fellow Victorian, from the Gellibrand electorate that included Williamstown, home to a significant component of the defence contractor Tenix, who were building the Canberra-class amphibious assault ships. ?And you, Minister King, owe me twenty bucks.? ?Should call the Tax Office on you.? Lucas muttered as he left the Prime Minister and Defence Minister alone. ?So, another delay on the JSF?? The PM asked as he waved King to a spare seat? ACTIONS 1. Business as usual 2. McColl asked. "Aye" they all chorused. The PM and his cabinet were all having a hasty meeting after the news hit that a car bomb had killed 10 Montrealers and that the Toronto RCMP had arrested suspects with links to the Iranian military. "Alright. I suggest we hold off publicly committing more until we know more information about this. Once we have the full picture, we will see what happens, ok? If this was the Iranians, they are obviously now more of a threat than we previously thought. We do know that they have financed terrorist groups for many years, but I want facts." the PM was a stickler for facts. Julia Bachman cut in, "I suggest we also start pressuring our allies to move faster on the Iran issue, as the sooner we start, the sooner it will be done." "True, very true. If we were going to commit more, what would be the approximate number John?" that was the PM again. John Ansdale, MoD, replied, "Well, im thinking in the ballpark of another 5,000 troops. We have excellent reserves too now. As the reg-force becomes depleted, we can start augmenting them with volunteers from the reserves if necessary. The Parachute battalion from the PPLCLI and the mechanized battalions from the Lord Strat, Vandoos, and the Royal Canadian Regiment will be among the forces we could potentially send. The first shipment of the new Leclerc MBT's from France will be arriving in the next couple of weeks too, so hopefully they will be in service soon. After we make the necessary modifications of course." The meeting wrapped up quickly after that, as not much was left to be said. Last minute preparations were also underway for the upcoming visit in early July from Jack Decker, the new Australian PM, and for McColl's also recently planned visit to DC in late July to meet with Williams. ------------------------ Actions: 1] Figure out whats going on with these terrorist strikes. 2] Possibly contribute more to the Azerbaijan mission, depending on what is unearthed regarding the recent terrorism 3] Plan and prepare for visiting Aussie PM Decker and McColl's visit to DC. 4] Reassure the nation -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Not for nothing, then, were the detectives of the MPD, as well as FBI technicians, working even more expeditiously than the situation demanded - the heat would pose problems in maintaining evidence, especially DNA evidence. As he walked the site with Congressional Leaders, then, President Williams looked about with a sharp eye. "What are you saying the casings were?" He asked the DC Police Chief. "7.62x39, sir. Warsaw Pact." "Consistent with an AK-47." "Yes sir. The guy we're holding probably saved a lot of people today." "No doubt. Was damn good shooting, I'm told, too." "How should we handle him?" "No special handling I can think of. FBI may want to chat with him, of course." "Understood, Mr. President." "That said, if he is in fact nominated by MPD for the Public Safety Medal of Valor, we'll consider the request expeditiously." "I understand." -- "Okay folks, what do we know?" Williams asked the intel community. DNI spoke up. "The Canadians got lucky, nailed some guys in Toronto who seem connected into all of this. "We're looking for smoking guns, and appear to have found some - weapons, ammo, data, hardcopy papers, all pointing the Canadian ops to be of Iranian origin. "We're expediting the ballistics from the shooting here, and the forensics from the bombings in Chicago and LA, see if we can pull up any connections." "Search warrants?" "Being executed as we speak," the FBI director noted. "We're taking sledgehammers to walls if need be." "Good; we'll reimburse the landlords," Williams said. "You know your jobs. Do them. My orders: Follow the evidence. If there's anything that points to a connection to the other incidents of today, in the US or elsewhere, let me know. If *anything* connects the US incidents to Iran, I want to know immediately. Late night phone calls included. "If there's enough evidence for an indictment, there will be enough evidence for a declaration of war. Bill," John motioned to his Chief of Staff, "advise Congress of that." "In the meantime, security condition will be THREATCON CHARLIE nationwide for 24 hours - we step it back down to normal over the next week. I doubt the Iranians will try that again. "Let's be about it." --- Actions: 1. As above. 2. If there's enough evidence for a grand jury indictment of Iranian personnel, there's enough evidence for a declaration of war against Iran. 3. Ask Congress for that Declaration. 4. Ask NATO to declare the attacks against NATO members applicable under Article V. 5. Visit the grieving and the wounded. The word invokes dread, excitement, fear. It sounds romantic until you've been there. War was the topic of the day in Ottawa. The Americans had confirmed that the attacks were of Iranian origin, and now the government was treating this most seriously. Every MP had been summoned from their summer frolicking back to Parliament Hill. A vote was scheduled for June.30, and the Prime Minister was to go on national television on July.1, Canada Day. The CBC and other news networks were broadcasting that the government was seeking a declaration of war on the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Special Parliamentary Session tomorrow, as a result of the attack in Montreal and the failed attack in Toronto. The government had released all the evidence to the public and was holding the arrested terrorists in special custody under the terrorist legislation passed after 9/11 until such time as they were allowed to ever see the light of day again. ----------------- June.30 'Mr. Prime Minister, I believe you have asked this house to vote on a declaration of war on Iran, and that you have asked NATO, under Article V, to assist in this endeavour as retaliation for this attack on our sovereignty. We will now vote." The speaker intoned. The house rose in the near perfect unison of approval, only three MP's were left sitting. "That is 304 in favour. All against?" The house sat and the three MP's rose. "That is 3 against. I cast my vote in favour of the declaration of war. A majority of 305 votes has been reached, I hereby dec-" The Speaker of the House by tradition cast his vote last, and after he finished, the noise was instantaneous and deafening. The press in the gallery caught it all on tape live. Canada was out for the blood and honour of its fallen in the disgusting and cowardly acts of terrorism. Not long after, the Canadian delegation to NATO submitted its recommendation that these attacks constituted a declaration of war on Canada, and thus all of NATO, and requested that NATO come to its assistance under Article V. The nation was already mobilizing. Factories were gearing up and the forces had been readied. The entire Royal Canadian Regiment, Lord Strathcona Regiment, and Vandoos as well as volunteers from the reserves were all gearing up for deployment over the next days and would constitute the first Canadian Expeditionary Force assembled since the second world war. Thousands of troops, support personnel, vehicles, and other equipment would all be deployed. -------------------- Actions: 1] Declaration of war on Iran 2] Get NATO off its arse 3] Mobilize -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As it was he smiled and replied. "You want us to lecture the Canadians on the dangers of protectionism?" Jotaro Fukeda the Minister of Trade, nodded, with the slightest of smiles. Sato shook his head and chuckled. "And what do you think we should say to Mr. McColl about it?" he asked. "It would be looked upon well by our business community if we could make some gesture of displeasure at the recent Canadian legislation." Don't hold your breath, Sato thought, McColl seemed like he was taking this seriously. "Very well," Sato agreed. "I assume the MoJ will be putting a case before the WTO on this matter?" Fukeda nodded. "The Minister did mention that he has people looking at it." "Very well," he said. "Tell him to keep it in his pocket for now, I will send a message of our displeasure to the Canadians and attempt to settle this diplomatically. If not." Sato made a gesture to imply it was out of his hands. Fukeda nodded. "There was also some grumbling from our friends in the business community, that we should perhaps shift ourselves away from importing Canadian oil, to send a message." "We can't afford to play politics with our petroleum supply," Sato said. "However we can change the name of the Canadian bacon in the Diet cafeteria to something else if you'd like?" Fukeda snorted but didn't sound that amused. "Ultimately, we don't import enough from the Canadians through Japan Oil to make much of a dent in things," he held up a hand to stay Fukeda's comment. "And we don't have to. Plummeting investor confidence and the American lawsuit will take care of things. The Canadians have already cut their own throat, there is no need for us to prick them with a pin for the sake of our pride." Nodding Fukeda asked. "What do we tell our friends in the business community?" "The truth, that they have the power to send a far bigger message than we do, however respecting their valued contribution to this country. And my campaign, he added in his head. "We will use all of our diplomatic tools to settle this before anyone's bottom line is too badly hurt." Sato checked the calendar on his desk. There was still enough time left in the current session of the Diet to put something through. "Also tell them you will be putting forward a motion in the Diet, formally chastising the Canadian government for this." Fukeda blinked dully. "I will?" he asked. "Yes," Sato said patiently. "To show our friends that we are taking care of their interests." Fukeda smiled. "I see, thank you Mr. Prime Minister." Sato waved the thanks away. "Think nothing of it. Anyhow, that I think should make them happy, don't you?" Fukeda nodded. "Yes, of course." Sato rose from his seat, a sign the meeting was over, and Fukeda followed his lead and Sato showed the newly minted cabinet minister across his office. "Thank you very much for this opportunity," Fukeda said speaking of his new post. "I hope I will not let you down." Sato nodded. "I am sure you will do fine," Sato assured him. "Though make sure your people have the Foreign Ministry look at your proposed resolution, we need to make sure that the Canadians know we are angry, but not too angry." "Yes sir," Fukeda said. "It will be couched in the proper diplomatic language." "Good," Sato said. "Anyhow, thank you for your visit Fukeda-san." The man bowed deeply and held it, and with nothing further to say, turned and left the Prime Minister's office, carefully closing the door behind him. Sato let out a sigh. The problem with filling the cabinet with pliable Ministers was none of them were very interesting. Still, he had Inukai and Jonouch and as Sakai loyalists they were very interesting, as well as very capable. Which of course meant that they both wanted his job, however so long as they *both* wanted it, he didn't worry about them teaming up and he certainly didn't worry about his ministers like Fukeda. He ran a hand across his close shaven graying hair as he walked back to his desk and chuckled. Having climbed this peak himself, he knew its secret; there was no glorious reward, just a much more arduous climb. Still smiling he sat back down and got back to work, and hoped that the Bodhisattva would be merciful on them. Actions: 1> Trade Minister Fukeda will put forward a resolution in the Diet to chastise the Canadian government about its recent takeover legislation. 2> Otherwise Japan will let the market and the Americans handle this one. 3> . and if they fail, the Ministry of Justice will move forward with a lawsuit of their own before the WTO. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... IC: "Sydney Bombing" June 29 2014 Prime Minister Jack Decker Canberra, Australia Decker was in a meeting, his first of the day. He was being walked through what Sharon Janes and her people at the Education Department had come up with to try and resolve the tertiary education issues that Decker had run on. "In an ideal world, we'd throw back to free university for everyone, but we're so far past there by now, we've got to help in other ways..." Decker was saying when he saw the door open, and Lucas was waving for his attention. "Excuse me." He said, rising, and walking over to Lucas. "What's going on?" Lucas spoke quietly. "There's been an explosion in Sydney." Decker's head snapped up. "What?" "Early reports say that a suicide bomber walked into the ferry terminal at Circular Quay, as most people were going to work." "Casualties?" "Believed to be fifteen dead, several injured." "Damn." Decker turned. "Umm, Sharon, we'll have to reschedule. Something's come up." "Oh, ok..." Her staff filed out, and Sharon came over. "What is it?" "There's been a bombing in Sydney." "Are you serious?" Decker turned to Lucas. "I want the Attorney General in here, as well as someone from the Federal Police. "It gets worse." Lucas said. "What?" "There were attacks in Chicago, LA, Washington DC, Montreal, Beijing, Karachi and London. The Mounties also stopped one in Toronto." Decker leaned against the door frame and crossed his arms across his chest. "Oh God." "The Americans are working a lot faster then us..." "Because they've had terrorist attacks before and we haven't really?" Decker offered, and Lucas nodded. "Apparently the Mounties got a helluva lot of intelligence." "Tell DFAT to give the US, Canadian, UK and Chinese embassies a call." Decker said. "Get the AG, Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs, AFP, ASIS, ASIO, and activate the Crisis Response Group. Get me ten minutes on the phone with the Premier too." *TWO HOURS LATER* The Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police re-entered the meeting room after taking a phone call. "I finally got through to the Americans." He said as he slipped back into his seat. "Mr. Prime Minister, they found a mother-load in Canada. Weapons, laptops, explosives, all linked to, drum-roll please, the Iranians." Decker's jaw clenched. "What?" "Iranian military equipment." "Jesus Christ..." Foreign Affairs Minister Joanna Griffin said quietly. "Well, this answers the Azerbaijan question." King growled. "In other news," Attorney General James Dunn said, looking at his notes, "preliminary analysis by the New South Wales Police shows that the explosion was caused by your standard suicide-bomber vest, plastic explosives and nails, the deaths were caused primarily by the shrapnel. The explosives were Semtex. Lucky enough for us the Canadians bagged those guys in Toronto, otherwise we'd be a bit lost. Semtex is far too common." "Ok." Decker said with a nod. "I want a chopper here to fly me to Sydney ASAP. How many were injured?" "Twenty-three, ranging from flash burns to shrapnel wounds." "Ok. Send our information to the Legal Attaches at the respective embassies." "Yes sir." --- Actions: 1. Preliminary reports from investigation 2. PM plans to head to Sydney 3. "What is it?" he asked as he realizes he had only just meant to rest his eyes at his desk. "There have been multiple terrorist attacks," she said. "Damn it, here?" Akemi shook her head emphatically. "Thankfully no, but in Sydney, Washington, Los Angeles." Sato cursed and got to his feet. "Has Mura?" "Yes, he is getting the relevant ministers and directors on the phone." Sato stood there a second and nodded. "Good, good," he said and looked out the window, where through the mirrored glass he could see Kantei security men ushering a tour group off the grounds. He shook his head. Yet more trouble. He was thirsty, and turned back to his desk to grab his bottle of water, he downed the luke warm water greedily and then sat back down. Akemi picked up his phone when it rang and then after a few quick "hai"s to the party at the other end, pressed speaker and hung up. "Hello?" asked Sato. "Who's on the line?" "Inukai, Jonouchi, Director Yoshida and myself," Mura replied. "Good, what's going on?" It was Director Yoshida, the Chief of the Cabinet Intelligence Office, who answered the question. "There have been a series of world wide attacks, in," there was the sound of shuffling papers and hushed voices. "Washington, Beijing, London, Sydney Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal, and Karachi." Sato nodded. "Any indications that we are at risk?" he asked. "No, sir not yet, however I have just heard from the Minister of Justice, he's activating our security plan and putting more police officers on the streets in high risk areas." Sato knew that against suicide bombers and mad gunmen, this was just about creating an illusion of safety, if the police or intelligence services didn't already have leads it was too late, but visible police presence would prevent panic. "Good," he said. "What sort of attacks?" "Bombs and shootings, we are still sorting out which happened where, but we do know some American statesmen were shot." He could see they were at the CNN phase of gathering intelligence. He thought back over the list. "Is this Iran?" he asked. "We don't know, but given the targets it's a tempting conclusion." Inukai grumbled. "Stupid plan if it is," he said. "It's like they are asking for war." Sato couldn't agree more, but then the Iranians were ruled by fanatics and you couldn't expect rationality from people like that. "Response?" he asked. "Nothing, we let the countries that were hit take the lead, however I expect if it is Iran, the war will be going forward and we should be ready to support that decision." "Agreed," Inukai concurred. "Also, I would suggest we earmark a couple more units for deployment, just in case." "I would agree," said Jonouchi. "Do it," Sato ordered. "Yoshida." "Yes Prime Minister?" he asked. "Talk to the other intelligence agencies, I would like a clear picture of this situation and if we have any intelligence on this." "We will share it at once with those countries attacked." "Good," Sato said. "Prime Minister," Jonouchi said. "I will have my people over to your office for translation services if you are going to make phone calls." "Yes please," Sato said. "Thank you." There was a moment of silence and people gathered their thoughts. "Let's get back to work," Sato said. "We'll let the proper agencies deal with things here, and meet later tonight if there's anything new." There were agreeing noises on the line and after everyone had signed off Akemi hung up the phone. "Stupid," he said. "I really hope it wasn't Iran or there won't be much of one left when the others get done with them." Actions: 1> Japan goes on alert and puts more police in the streets. 2> Japanese intelligence services go through their data with a fine toothed comb to see if they have anything that could help and if so they will release to all the nations who were attacked. 3> The Ministry of Defense will prepare to up Japan's commitment to the Azerbaijan mission by 500 troops in case they are needed. 4> The Prime Minister will call the heads of the nations attacked and offer his condolences and support. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... National and Beijing City police had the place on lock-down, backed up by Reservists from the Beijing military district. Rescue efforts of course received the highest priority, and following that came the investigation itself. Xia, being neither a medical expert nor a forensic specialist, knew that it was best for her to simply let things be, and let the professionals do their job. Her job was to lead and organize... so in a vibrant red ball gown (she 'had' intended on seeing the Beijing Symphony Orchestra that night with Wen in one of their few public appearances since 'the incident') she and her staff toured the avenue right outside the executive offices. The cowards didn't even have the gaul for a decapitation strike. "An example must be made, Madame President." General Bao spoke. "We need some kind of immediate response. I can take what forces we have in position, and with your permission, begin striking back." "What will your plan be?" "Artillery strikes against border defense positions, concurrent with land based cruise missile strikes of air defenses, enemy command and control, headquarters, communications, reconaissance, air fields, and army facilities along a corridor from the border to Tehran. J-10 sweeps will clear the skies for a Special Forces Raid deep into Tehran. Troops will fast rope into the city, break down the doors to Iran's capitol, and round up the Islamic Council. They will be under orders to kill or capture key members of the Iranian Government as well, including the President." Xia nodded. "Do it. I'll go before the PNC and insure their support, but I doubt we'll have much problems doing so after thi..." She didn't even finish her sentence when she saw a bloodied body being put on a stretcher, in a well made Chinese Tuxedo. The face was burned beyond recognition, but somehow... well women just knew. "Wen?" She mouthed in a barely audible tone before screaming. "Wen?!" The people around her barely had time to blink before she took off. Xia was pretty fast, and the Police knew better than to get in the way. "Wen? Oh my God..." Near tears, she took his hand. He looked nothing like the husband she knew... truth be told he looked more like a cow post-slaughter. "Wen, talk to me. Please..." There was a gurgling sound, a squeeze of a hand, and then the Paramedics loaded him into an awaiting ambulance. Xia looked down to find red, sickly warm liquid in her palm. The Iranians would pay for this... she would she to that. ========================================================= ACTIONS 1. Full attention on the rescue effort. Once all the wounded and dead are accounted for, the investigation will be most important. 2. Rapid Response: Chinese retaliatory strikes against Iran. Strike fast, strike hard, and strike deep. - Troops from China's Special Forces 'Raiders' Regiment to rope into Tehran and execute arrests of Iranian Governing officials and the Islamic Council. Chopper out, and then put them on a flight to Beijing. 3. Xinhua to announce the news of 'First Husband' Wen being in critical condition at the hospital. **************Gas prices getting you down?
