After the last two weeks the McColl government's fortunes have
improved, slightly. The PM's comments regarding the prisoners have
calmed a few tempers, and most Canadians believe that even the hardest
criminals are better off in Canada than in China. However, according
to a recent Ipsos-Reid poll, 68% of Canadians believe Canada should
pay reparations to the families of the Chinese policemen killed in the
raid.

The contracts with the US for subs, while giving the budget hawks
fits, are well received, both as a needed military development for
northern defense, and as a chance for the firms 'apprenticing' with
the US builders to learn valuable skills to give Canada a shot at
making their own subs in the future. The support for the Bombardier
bid has also got nods from industry, and promoted the general feeling
in Canadian business that the government is in their corner.

However the same cannot be said of immigrants, especially those who
hope to bring their families to join them, as reducing the number of
slots reduce their chances. As such they have begun their own protests
on Parliament Hill and Liberal MPs from ridings with a majority of
immigrant voters have been grumbling mutinously in caucus meetings.
However, the rest of the 'Baby Bounty' package is well received by the
public.

As Japan steps into a prominent role in the rebuilding of Iran, a
fierce debate is beginning in Japan. While there's general support for
the aid project, and it gives a slight bump to Japanese standing in
the world, it begins anew the debate over Article 9 and much of the
Constitution - if Article 9 is to be changed by stealth, then why not
the role of the Emperor, or other elements of the Constitution?

Curiously, that argument, being advanced by leftists, is being taken
up (in a different way) by those on the right: Why -not- change the
role of the Emperor to one more reminiscent of the British monarchy,
or otherwise change the Constitution?

Despite even a minor brawl being unleashed in the Diet in a debate
over the issue (quickly ended by physical intervention from both
sides), tempest still swirls, and all eyes are coming to rest upon the
Government, where factions are quickly developing on all sides of the
issues at hand.

All in all, not a bad two weeks for the Rodriguez government. Her wide
consultations on military matters have generated something of a
stateswoman buzz about her, and her firm response to the US regarding
military nuclear matters is well-regarded. That said, the "trains
issue" is becoming a matter of national pride for both Canada and
China, and there's mixed feeling specifically regarding
Spanish-Chinese relations; While on the one hand people are generally
happy regarding the trade deal and the green initiatives, there's a
feeling of unease regarding the general closeness of relations, and
particularly regarding Spain's seeming legitimization of China's
occupation of part of Iran.

On that note, the EU has nodded to Spain's green technology plans and
economic plans, and the Benelux countries are among others in the EU
that have joined the green technology bandwagon.

UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND
========================

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Unemployment: 4.2%
-------------------------

The last two weeks have been positive for the Williams Administration,
with Congress satisfied by their cooperation with the Canadian Caper
investigation and the productiveness of the President's working
vacation in Europe. Additionally, the President's support for NATO and
letting other nations do the heavy lifting in Iran, are met with nods
from the internationalists in Congress, while the more Imperial minded
politicos feel it weakens the US position not to be taking the lead in
every endeavor. However, the people are satisfied by the move and
approve of the more neighborly America put forward by Williams.

However the sub deal with Canada is another matter. Following so soon
after the Canadians used US intelligence on a raid that nearly sparked
war between China and Canada a lot of people are critical of trusting
the Canucks with nuclear powered submarines, let alone teaching them
how to make them. The general feeling among the people, government and
media is that the McColl government is too unstable to be trusted with
the subs. As such, Congress has called hearings to review the sale,
and in general call the Canadian government and their supporters in
Washington onto the carpet for the raid on China.

Lastly, as the Chinese incursion into Iran continues, there are voices
in government and in the press who are calling for a clear direction
from the White House in what to do about China and its recent spate of
Imperialist aggression.

ECONOMIC INDICATORS

NOTE: Initial indicators were gleaned from as recent sources as
possible, for the most recent term possible (annualized). In some
cases, the numbers used are published estimates, but the English-
speaking nations' data is more or less right from the source.

Depression: Economic forces retracting uncontrollably and at a
dangerous pace with little end in sight.

Recession: Economic forces retracting, but more shallow than
Depression and more controlably. Sometimes necessary and part of
regular economic trends, although prelonged.

Revision: Economic forces retracting slightly and short term,
associated with economic systems refitting to accomodate new
industries, concentrations, etc.

Zero: No movement one way or the other.
Low: Comparatively low Economic growth/activity. (miniscule to about
2%, depending)
Good: Average economic activity (ranging from 2%-5% normally)
High: Above average performance (Greater than 5%) Sometimes
dangerous if in excess of 8% continuously.
