Gazprom, on the other hand...Well. I seem to remember one of the 
defining points of sovereignty being "having a monopoly on the 
legitimate use of force in your territory".

...Somehow, I don't see that working if the oil company has an army.

It's not uncommon for big companies to have elaborate security forces.  
General Dynamics has it's own industry focussed on providing mercinaries... DeBeers 
in Africa has a more formidable security force than most African nations have.
