Hi all,

Just a bit of background info on the Australian PM.

Jack Decker was born in Warrnambool, Victoria. His parents were, at the time, both primary school teachers. On reflection, his childhood was pretty good. He struggled with bullying in his early primary school days, but it eventually rectified itself. He loved his family, and loved having such a huge extended family at Christmas time.

Jack left the western district to move to Melbourne to study. Originally he had wanted to go to the Defence Force Academy, but his parents were very unimpressed with the idea. So he decided he’d go to a normal university, and if he still felt like it after that, he’d sign up then. He studied a Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) at Deakin University. One of his minors was Arabic, which he now speaks fluently. During his time there he met another student, Lisa, who was studying Secondary Teaching. They began dating in his second year.

After graduating, Decker applied for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. However, he missed out this time around, so he headed for HMAS Creswell for the Entry Officer Course in the Royal Australian Navy. After training his first posting was aboard the HMAS Sydney, a guided missile frigate. Following that, it was the HMAS Ballarat, based out of Fleet Base East in Sydney. Lisa, who had graduated a year after Jack left, got a teaching job in Sydney as well. During this time, Jack proposed to Lisa. They got married back in Warrnambool, and, in between Jack’s time at sea, started a family.

After ten years in the Navy, Lieutenant Jack Decker decided to have another try at joining DFAT. This time, with military service to add to his education, he made it. Jack’s time in DFAT included time at the Embassy in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the USA. In 2003, Jack returned to his family home of Port Fairy to run for Parliament against Speaker David Hawker, and he won. Decker’s seizing of the Prime Ministership a few years later was a sight to see, the man who no one really knew suddenly taking control of the Party. This charming, down-to-earth man (who confesses a love of action movies, the Geelong Football Club and the Rolling Stones) has almost become a belated answer to JFK in Australian politics, curbing the disinterest that many Australians had felt with their political system.
